Motorola Computer Group (MCG), a part of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), today announced FACT-MEGACO, powerful new software designed to accelerate the creation of media gateway subsystems. FACT-MEGACO provides a Megaco/H.248 client interface—the official industry standard protocol for interfacing between a media gateway controller and media gateways—for Motorola's ComStruct™ IGP1000 application-ready platforms and high-density packet voice resource boards such as the PVRB672, CPCI-C5421 and PVRM672. Motorola released FACT-MEGACO software to early access customers this month.

FACT-MEGACO controls the packet voice processing resources from a standards-based media gateway controller, helping to enable multi-channel applications. It includes field-proven packet telephony resources such as G.723.1 and G.729AB codecs, long tail length echo cancellation and T.38 fax relay. The software can easily be configured and managed via an SNMP management connection. The management application interface is designed to enable users to add custom features to enhance the functionality of their media gateway.

The industry standard Megaco/H.248 follows the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) softswitch model. A combination of multiple gateways managed from a single gateway controller is capable of replacing a Class 5 local switch. The principles of the Megaco protocol are that the media streams end in terminations that are connected by placing them into a context. Contexts can contain multiple terminations allowing for conferencing applications, and the Megaco commands are defined within extensible packages for ease of use.
