Summary: Nucleus support for Graphics Client Plus
Full Text: Applied Data Systems (ADS) and Accelerated Technology Inc. (ATI) introduced a complete “production-ready” system featuring ATI’s Nucleus PLUS real-time kernel running on ADS’ Graphics Client Plus embedded single board computer. Applied Data Systems is a leading manufacturer of embedded RISC-based systems, led by its popular and family-leading Graphics Client Plus, and will soon be introducing its XScale line of products. Accelerated Technology Inc. (ATI) is a leading provider of source code and no-royalty RTOS products. Integration of Nucleus PLUS into the Graphics Client Plus board is a natural step since the Nucleus kernel already has an established StrongARM and XScale application customer base.
All drivers are complete for this combined platform, and target markets include process control, medical monitoring, asset and vehicle management, kiosks and battery-operated/handheld devices. Developers of these applications will benefit from the availability of source code and royalty-free offerings provided by the Nucleus/Graphics Client Plus integrated technology.
The ADS Graphics Client Plus provides a feature-rich I/O on a compact 4” X 6” single-board platform designed for a range of embedded industrial applications. The Graphics Client Plus meets the most rugged industrial requirements, including validation for extended (-40 to +85degC) temperature range, wireless and Internet-enabling applications. The Graphics Client Plus supports a comprehensive array of on-board communication devices, highlighted by CAN, Ethernet (brought out both through the on-board chip and via PCMCIA, providing simultaneous LAN and WAN capabilities), three serial ports, PCMCIA, IrDA, and an extensive user-configurable selection of “Smart IO” (selectable from 32 digital, 12 analog, and 3 PWM). Video support goes as high as XGA.
Because of its RISC environment and streamlined engineering platform, the Graphics Client Plus produces minimal heat output and has a power requirement of less than 2W, which is ideal for battery powered applications.
The Nucleus PLUS kernel provides efficient, high performance task management, inter-task communication, inter-task synchronization, memory management, and component query features. Optimizations in system clock, interrupt and compiler register usage are only part of the advanced features provided by Nucleus PLUS. The kernel handles difficult issues such as priority inversion while minimizing the interrupt latency to a few microseconds.
“Because the Graphics Client Plus’ robust technology is dynamic and small, coupled with ATI’s Nucleus product line, the platform will provide tremendous performance at a low price point with low power consumption,” said Robert Olsen, CEO of ADS.
“The broad offering of peripherals and full video support makes this platform attractive to a wide-range of developers. Using Nucleus GRAFIX with this development platform will be a perfect combination for anyone building a GUI or graphics-intensive application,” said M. Kyle Craig, product marketing manager, Accelerated Technology, Inc.
